Caring for Your Weave

Learning to care for your weave is the first step in getting the most out of your extensions and install, as well as, maintaining your hair health. Nowadays, there are so many different install techniques it can make your head spin; but the fundamental idea is the same: Cleanse, Moisturize, and Maintain.

Cleansing your scalp and washing your hair can seem like a daunting task when you are wearing a weave. The most important step in the washing process is to remove the dead skin cells and product build-up that will be a hindrance to natural hair growth.

The tighter the coil of your natural hair the harder moisture retention is. To combat breakage that often starts with dry hair be sure to first dry your natural hair thoroughly with the use of a blow dryer. Then flow up with a leave-in conditioner and seal with an oil of your choice. Your hair extension should be moistured with the leave-in conditioner but you can often skip the oil.

Be sure to extend the life of your hair extensions by reducing the amount of heat styling tools that are used on a daily basis. Using buns, braids, and twists can help define curls instead of curling irons. Sleeping with a satin scarf at night is also a great way to increase the length of your hair extensions and style.

The most important thing to remember is that a weave should be a protective style. Giving your hair breaks in between installs will ensure that your natural hair does not get stressed out and suffer breakage.
